Religious importance of Gosaikunda Lake Trek
Gosaikunda Lake is a holy place for all Hindu pilgrims. As per Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is believed to be the creator of this lake. An importance event – Samundra Manthan in Bhagwad Gita (a holy book of Hindus) describes the formation of this lake. Samundra Manthan is an event when lords and evils came together in the mountain to form – Amrit (a liquid that would make one immortal). During this event, a poison was created that could possibly destroy the world and its existence. Therefore, Lord Shiva endured the poison himself to save the world. The burning sensation created by poison was unbearable, therefore, with the help of his trident, he broke the glacier to extract water and drank the water to quench his thirst. The water hence extracted formed the lake Gosaikunda.
Anyone who takes a bath in this holy lake is believed to get rid of all the sins done by the person till date. Each year in the full moon day of August, many Hindu pilgrims from around the world gather in this place to celebrate Janai Purnima festival. They take a holy bath in the lake to get away from all the bad karma done by them.
